Q and A with David Hammond

Q. David, as Sales Development Director at Auto Marine, what in your opinion are the key factors that have contributed to your 50 years in business?

A. Without doubt, a great team of dedicated people. Lots of hard work and a belief that we can be the best.

Q. The Marine and Automotive Industries must be flooded with cable products and components, what differentiates Auto Marine’s product offering from the competition?

A. Being both a cable manufacturer and a distributor enables us to satisfy customer requirements quickly and gives us great flexibility.

Q. Auto Marine is the official UK aftermarket distributor for MTA’s range of fuses and circuit protection products. As a business, what value do you place on this relationship with MTA Italy?

A.  We have had a 25 year relationship with MTA.  Their range of products and the consistent quality of those products is priceless to a large part of our customer base.

Q. Auto Marine is now exporting to other countries, have you experienced any barriers to entry in certain markets and how have you overcome these barriers as a business?

A.  I think the biggest barrier has been a mental one. If we offer our products will they buy them? The answer is if you do your research properly and offer the right products then the answer is yes.

Q. I see you are exhibiting at Automechanika, Germany and METS, Holland in September and November this year, how important is it for Auto Marine to exhibit internationally?

A. If we are serious about exporting then we have to be in the shop window.  Shows are expensive to attend and they payback is not always immediate, stick with it and it will come good.

Q. What are your sales objectives for the next 5 years?

A. To grow the business offering customers at home and overseas great value products, competitively priced and delivered on time.

Q. Are there any products due for launch soon?

A. There are several new product ranges coming soon.  We will announce some of them during the Frankfurt and Amsterdam’s shows.

Q. Finally David, I know all staff achieved NVQ level 2 or 3 in business improvement in recent years, how important is the Auto Marine team to the success of the business?

A. Without a great team we would be a shadow of the company that we are today.
